CLINTON, S.C. — Presbyterian College junior Mary Ellen Longmire, who plays for the Blue Hose women’s tennis team in Clinton, picked up the school’s weekly student-athlete honor, sponsored by Adidas and Game One, after a spotless closing weekend.
Longmire won all three of her singles matches at the Wofford Invite and took her flight without dropping a set. Her three opponents won a combined 18 games against her, and only once did she give up more than four games in a set. She also added a doubles win with partner Keira Stewart.
Wofford hosted the three-day event at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, and it doubled as the home finale of the fall for the Terriers. Seven schools took part: the host, Presbyterian, Liberty, Mercer, Furman, Western Carolina and UNC Asheville. The Terriers had a singles winner of their own, as one of their players also went unbeaten in three matches to take her draw.
A week earlier in Rock Hill, Longmire and Stewart finished as runners-up at the Big South Fall Doubles Championship. They won two matches to get to the title match, the second an 8-4 semifinal win against Charleston Southern’s top-seeded pair.
The Wofford Invite wrapped the fall slate for PC. Coach and players now get a break until January, when the Blue Hose open their spring schedule.
