CLINTON, S.C. — Alyssa Febres, a junior guard on the Presbyterian College women’s basketball team in Clinton, has been chosen for the Kay Yow Servant Leader Award, a national honor for players who put others first.

The award, named for the late Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow, goes to women’s college basketball players at every level, from Division I to junior college. Coaches nominate their players, and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund picks the winners. Before this season, 66 players had earned the honor nationwide. The fund created the award ahead of the 2024-25 season, and its 2026-27 class, expected to top 90 players, will be announced in full in December.

Each honoree gets a special Servant Leader patch to wear on her game jersey for the season. When the season ends, the fund picks one of them as its Servant Leader of the Year, and a $25,000 grant will go in that player’s name to a local health care provider.

Febres, who is from Yonkers, New York, joined the Blue Hose this season after two years at Kansas City, where she played in 53 games. Last season she appeared in 29 games and averaged 2.8 assists. In high school at Monsignor Scanlan, she scored more than 1,000 career points and was named all-state. She plans to major in business administration.

Yow won more than 700 games as a head coach at Elon and NC State and led the U.S. women’s national team to Olympic gold in 1988, a year after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The fund that carries her name has given more than $11 million to fight cancers that affect women.
