CLINTON, S.C. — Clinton High School will start its state playoff run at home. The Red Devils landed the No. 7 seed in the Upper State half of the Class 2A bracket and will welcome No. 10 Liberty for a first-round game on Friday, Nov. 6.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., according to the game listing for the matchup. The night will feature two teams with the same nickname, since Liberty also plays as the Red Devils.
Clinton goes into the postseason at 6-4 and on a three-game winning streak, which followed a three-game skid in the middle of the season. The latest win came Friday, when the Red Devils ran for 431 yards and beat Woodruff 43-21 on Senior Night at Wilder Stadium. Senior running back Angelo Cromer went over 1,000 rushing yards for the season in that game.
Liberty enters the playoffs with a 5-5 overall record.
Before the pairings came out, Clinton had been waiting on the region points system to settle where it would land among the Region 2-AA teams chasing first-place Southside Christian. Southside Christian finished atop the region with an 8-2 record and a perfect 4-0 mark in league play, and it drew the No. 2 seed in the Upper State bracket along with a first-round bye. Mid-Carolina holds the top seed and also sits out the opening week.
Several other Upstate teams with ties to Clinton’s season are in the same half of the bracket. Woodruff, the team Clinton just beat, is the No. 14 seed and travels to No. 3 Crescent. Chesnee, seeded sixth, hosts No. 11 Pendleton, and Mountain View Prep, the No. 9 seed, goes to No. 8 Chester. In other Upper State openers, No. 13 Newberry visits No. 4 Keenan and No. 12 Andrew Jackson plays at No. 5 St. Joseph’s.
The Class 2A state championship game is scheduled for Dec. 4 at 4 p.m.
