CLINTON, S.C. — Clinton High School leaned on its running game Friday night, piling up 431 rushing yards in a 43-21 Senior Night win over Woodruff at Wilder Stadium.

The victory was Clinton’s third straight, coming right after a three-game slide, and it lifted the Red Devils to 6-4 heading into the state playoffs. It also ended a two-year losing streak against the Wolverines in a rivalry that dates back to 1923. Clinton has now beaten Woodruff 57 times.

Senior running back Angelo Cromer carried 15 times for 152 yards, a night that pushed him past 1,000 yards this season and 2,000 for his career. He also picked off a pass. Senior quarterback Owen Glenn added 95 yards on eight runs and had a hand in much of the scoring.

Glenn scored the first touchdown on a run, and Cam Croft tacked on the two-point try. Woodruff answered through the air, and the teams traded scores again after Glenn broke a 26-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6. Clinton fumbled a kickoff to set up a short Woodruff drive, but Cromer’s interception ended it. Clinton cashed in moments later on a 27-yard touchdown run by Cromer, with Glenn keeping the ball for two more points.

Clinton opened the second half with a 70-yard drive. Facing fourth down and 16, Glenn found Graydon Watkins for a 39-yard touchdown, and Camden Gregory ran in the extra two points. After Croft intercepted a pass, Cromer scored again to put the Red Devils up 36-13 late in the third quarter. Glenn added one more touchdown run with 6:20 left.

The Red Devils’ defense held Woodruff to 75 rushing yards on 25 tries and allowed just three third-down conversions in 12 attempts. The Wolverines did most of their damage passing, finishing with 219 yards through the air. Receiver Micah McClintock led Woodruff with 112 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Clinton has won nine of its last 10 games at home and is averaging 43.4 points this season. Woodruff dropped to 4-6 with its fourth straight road loss.

Before kickoff, the school honored its seniors and recognized athletic director and offensive coordinator Louie Alexander for coaching in his 350th high school football game. Clinton now waits on the region points system to learn its Region 2-AA seeding and its opponent for the first round of the playoffs next Friday. Southside Christian, at 4-0 in the region, holds the top spot.
