CLINTON, S.C. — Laurens County School District 56 has apologized after Halloween treats were packed in medicine bottles and given to children at a Clinton elementary school in the days before Halloween.
The district posted its response Saturday evening on social media. It said the people involved meant well and would never knowingly put a child at risk, but that packing treats in pill bottles was the wrong way to hand out candy to children.
Parents said the bottles were distributed during lunch at Eastside Elementary School and were supplied by Sadler Hughes Apothecary, which has also apologized. The pharmacy at 102 Jacobs Hwy has served Clinton and Laurens County since 1917.
Eastside Elementary, at 103 Old Colony Road, serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
District leaders noted that schools teach medication safety and tell children that medicine bottles are never toys. They said the episode will be used to stress student safety so it does not happen again, and that the well-being of students remains the top priority.
