CLINTON, S.C. — Roughly 125 Presbyterian College students fanned out across Clinton and nearby parts of Laurens County for the college’s fall Service Day, lending a hand to gardens, churches, a retirement community, the Whitten Center and animal groups, the college said this week.
The day is run by Student Volunteer Services, the student group that links PC students with local partners. Its stated mission is to live out the PC motto, While We Live, We Serve, through hands-on work that suits each student, whatever their major. The group also pitches service as a way for students to build leadership skills and take part in service-learning projects with community partners.
This fall’s stops included Langston Square, Thornwell Gardens, the Laurens County Humane Society, Clinton Canopy, the Whitten Center, Clinton Presbyterian Community, Palmetto Equestrian Therapeutic and Springdale United Methodist Church.
The jobs varied by site. At a senior living stop, students called BINGO games with residents. At the Whitten Center they shot baskets and did arts and crafts. Volunteers kept animals company at the humane society and cleaned and readied the barn used by the equestrian therapy program. Others weeded and tidied gardens and grounds or tackled upkeep on church property.
Students who stayed on campus wrote cards for Ronald McDonald House Charities, put together gift baskets for teaching parents at Thornwell, and pitched in at the campus greenhouse and EcoHub.
The tradition runs deep at PC. Last year’s fall Service Day, held Sept. 6, 2025, marked the 60th anniversary of Student Volunteer Services, and the stops that day also included a community garden, the humane society, the equestrian therapy barn, Springdale Methodist and the garden at the Laurens County Public Library. Students and faculty took part that day, and the Rev. Dr. British Hyrams, the college’s associate chaplain, said then that the number of students eager to volunteer and to lead was climbing again after the pandemic slowed things down.
