JOANNA, S.C. — Staff at the Laurens County Sheriff’s Animal Shelter want neighbors in the Joanna community to help them figure out who let a young dog suffer with a collar that had grown into her neck.
Shelter staff say the female, about 8 months old, had been spotted roaming for some time around Taylor Street and Calhoun Street before crews were able to trap her last week. Along with the embedded collar, she was covered in fleas and had lost a large amount of hair.
Shelter officials say a collar sized for a puppy should have been swapped out as she grew. Instead it was left on until it cut into her skin, and she now faces several surgeries.
Clinton Animal Hospital stepped in right away to treat her. People who want to help pay for her care can donate through the animal hospital in person or by phone at 864-833-2487. Two volunteer groups, Anakin’s Trails and HyperSky Search Services, helped with the capture.
Tips about where the dog came from go to the county animal control shelter, 864-682-4935, or to Laurens County Dispatch at 864-984-2523. Callers do not have to give their names.
