LAURENS, S.C. — Laurens County is set to gain a new law practice. Attorney Michanna Talley Tate says she will open her own firm in Laurens, though a site for the office has not been chosen yet.
The firm plans to concentrate on three kinds of cases: disputes over real estate, personal injury claims and medical malpractice. Tate already practices out of an office in Greenville that she took over from her late father, also a lawyer, in 2022.
She says people from Laurens, Union and Newberry counties already make the drive to Greenville to see her, and that many Laurens residents end up hiring lawyers from outside the county or even outside the Upstate. State bar figures from 2021 counted only 12 private attorneys working in Laurens County.
Tate is a onetime prosecutor, professor and scientist. She is also the Democratic nominee for South Carolina House District 14 in the Nov. 3 general election, and she describes the law firm and her campaign as separate efforts.
