LAURENS, S.C. — Laurens Academy’s Caleb Hardy has been picked as the Laurens County Touchdown Club’s Player of the Week for his work in the Crusaders’ comeback over Newberry Academy last Friday.
Hardy, who lines up at H-back on offense and linebacker on defense, carried the ball for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the 34-28 win. He also caught passes for 57 yards and another score, ran in two 2-point conversions and made a team-best 16 tackles.
His night came in the toughest game of the season for LA so far. Newberry Academy led 22-18 at the break, the first time all year the Crusaders had gone into halftime behind. Laurens Academy pulled ahead 26-22 in the third quarter and held on at Todd Kirk Field to improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the region.
The club announced the award Monday. Hardy will be recognized Thursday, Oct. 29, at the club’s sixth meeting of the year, held at noon at The Ridge in Laurens. Big Air of Laurens is catering, and the food line opens at 11:45 a.m. Former Clemson head coach Danny Ford, who led the Tigers to the 1981 national championship, is the featured speaker. Farm Bureau Insurance of Laurens County sponsors this year’s weekly awards.
Laurens Academy closes the regular season Friday night at Richard Winn Academy in Winnsboro. The Crusaders beat Richard Winn 50-18 in the season opener, and the playoffs begin Nov. 6.
