CLINTON, S.C. — Damin Lamont Williams Jr. is in custody and faces a weapons charge after an argument outside the Wendy’s on Highway 56 in Clinton turned into gunfire Tuesday night, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said.
The call reporting gunfire came in around 8:15 p.m., and deputies arriving at the scene found one person who had been shot.
Investigators say Williams and the wounded person had been arguing before rounds were fired into the car the victim was driving and into the restaurant itself, which had people inside who could have been hit.
Not far from the restaurant, a Clinton Police Department officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle linked to the gunfire and detained Williams, who was behind the wheel.
His charges include one for having a weapon while committing a violent crime. The sheriff’s office has not said what started the argument or how badly the victim was hurt.
Prosecution of Laurens County felony cases falls to the Eighth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, whose circuit also takes in Abbeville, Greenwood and Newberry counties.
