CLINTON, S.C. — Clinton police have been on the job in the city since 1852. For anyone who needs a report, wants to see how officers work or is wondering who follows up on a crime, here is how the department is set up.
Three divisions, each led by a captain, make up the department. Patrol includes uniformed officers who work around the clock answering emergency and non-emergency calls, enforcing traffic laws and investigating wrecks, plus school resource officers.
Detectives in criminal investigations take over after patrol on felony and misdemeanor crimes, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to build cases. Support services covers police telecommunicators, who are the first contact for police calls in the city, along with records, the front counter and an evidence technician who handles found property.
Need a copy of an incident report? The city takes requests online through its open records request form, so you do not have to come to the department.
Residents who want to see the job up close can apply for a ride-along with an officer for part of a shift. The application must be printed, signed with a witness and returned, and police contact approved applicants by phone or email with a date and time.
Cases that Clinton officers make are prosecuted by the 8th Circuit solicitor’s office, which covers Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties.
