CLINTON, S.C. — Five schools in Clinton have a city police officer assigned to them, from the youngest students to high school seniors.
Clinton police assign school resource officers to Clinton High, Clinton Middle, Clinton Elementary, Eastside Elementary and the M.S. Bailey Child Development Center, which serves the district’s youngest children. The department says the officers are there to keep campuses safe for learning and to handle any law enforcement need on school grounds.
The officers are part of the patrol division, one of three divisions in the department, each overseen by a captain. Patrol officers work around the clock, while detectives in a separate division follow up on felony and misdemeanor crimes.
Under its mission statement, the department pledges to protect lives and property and enforce the law while honoring the Constitution, and to treat people impartially, without favoritism or bias.
South Carolina also helps put officers in schools. The state public safety department sends money to police agencies to hire certified officers as school resource officers for districts that otherwise would lack the resources, and agencies apply through its highway safety and justice programs office.
