Presbyterian College’s newest students, including the Class of 2030 and transfer students, participated in a service event on Sunday, August 23, as part of their orientation. They joined volunteers from First Presbyterian Church of Clinton to package 25,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief organization.
This annual event, traditionally sponsored by First Presbyterian Church and held at the church, was hosted this year at PC’s Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center. Its inclusion in New Student Orientation introduces incoming students to the college’s commitment to service. The Reverend Andy Chambers, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, highlighted the historical connection between the church and Presbyterian College, noting that PC founder the Reverend William Plumer Jacobs also served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church, often referred to as the college’s mother church.
Jessie Allmond of Laurens, a Thornwell Charter School graduate planning to study biology on a pre-med track, found the project a meaningful way to start her college journey. Tierra Coley of Georgetown stated that PC’s emphasis on volunteering and fundraising was a direct factor in her decision to attend the college, aligning with her goal of becoming a nurse. Elijah Grant of Clinton, a Laurens District High School graduate and member of the Blue Hose baseball program, noted that the project helps freshmen get involved with the community and meet classmates.
Trent Pavlus, a member of the football team from the Jacksonville, Florida, area, observed that PC’s emphasis on service was evident even before his arrival, reinforcing his decision to attend. Dr. Ron Zimmerman, a former PC biology professor and First Presbyterian Church member, remarked on the strong turnout, stating that PC students consistently show up for such events, reflecting their character and the importance they place on service.
Abbie Donaldson ’27 and Becca King ’27, co-directors of PC’s Student Volunteer Services, emphasized that the event allows new students to learn the college’s core values rooted in service while connecting with peers. The Reverend Dr. British Hyrams, PC’s Jack and Jane Presseau associate chaplain, explained that engaging students in service before classes begin helps them understand that service is an expected practice within the college community.
The event’s relocation to the Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center this year due to unforeseen circumstances demonstrated the community’s collaborative spirit. Church members, college administrators, and others worked together to ensure the project proceeded. PC athletics administrator Dee Nichols helped identify the alternative location, and Head wrestling coach Mark Cody and members of the Blue Hose men’s wrestling team assisted with logistics, further exemplifying the college’s dedication to service.
