LAURENS, S.C. — The Rotary Club of Laurens holds its 24th Little River Duck Race on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 4:30 p.m., in the middle of the Squealin’ on the Square festival downtown.
No other event raises more money for the club each year. Proceeds pay for the Rotary backpack effort that sends students home with food for the weekend, along with Rotary Readers, youth groups such as Straight Street and other service work in the county.
A single duck costs a $5 donation, and five go for $20. The first duck to finish wins $350 and the runner-up takes $150, while the last duck across the line earns $100.
Tickets will be sold at the Rotary booth at the festival on race day. Before then, buyers can pick them up at the Commission of Public Works, the Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission or The Ridge, which sells them on Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m.
The festival itself takes over downtown Laurens on Oct. 16 and 17 with barbecue, two days of live music, local vendors and a kids zone for young visitors. Organizers pitch it as a family weekend built around local food, music and businesses.
