Dark thunderstorm clouds over a school building in Clinton

News Summary

Severe thunderstorms are threatening Clinton County with damaging winds up to 70 mph. Meanwhile, Clinton High School Trustees finalize the 2026-27 academic calendar and revise retention policies under the Read To Succeed initiative. Additionally, thirteen new district-based courses were approved, and several key end-of-year events are scheduled, highlighting the school district’s commitment to academic excellence amidst severe weather warnings.

Clinton, New York – Severe thunderstorms are threatening Clinton County as a warning has been issued until 12:30 a.m. EDT Friday. Residents are advised to prepare for damaging wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 70 mph. Thunderstorms are expected to move eastward at 40 mph, bringing with them the potential for significant tree damage as well as threats to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Amid these weather warnings, the Clinton High School Trustees convened on May 19 to finalize plans for the upcoming academic year and update retention policies. The board approved the 2026-27 academic calendar, establishing August 4, 2026, as the first day of school.

In line with state requirements, retention policies were revised under the Read To Succeed initiative, focusing on the crucial third-grade year for reading proficiency. Students unable to achieve grade-level reading skills will be required to repeat their current grade and will receive supplemental tutoring to improve their literacy skills. Intensive instruction and targeted interventions are being implemented to support students who are struggling academically.

Additionally, the Trustees authorized the introduction of thirteen new district-based courses, including “Real-Life 101 and 102,” leadership classes designed for elementary and middle school students, and a course titled “Earth in Motion” for Clinton Middle School students.

As the school year comes to a close, several key events are on the horizon for the district. The Senior Breakfast and District Academic Awards are scheduled for May 28. Following that, Senior Night will take place on May 29 featuring fireworks, while the Commencement ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on May 30, to be held in the main gymnasium.

In another notable achievement, the combined Science Olympiad team from Clinton Middle School and Clinton High School is headed to Nebraska to compete in the National Science Olympiad. This event highlights the district’s commitment to fostering academic excellence.

Recently, Clinton High School celebrated its athletic achievements during the annual athletic awards program and recognized the Red Devil football team for winning the 2024 AA State Football Championship. Clinton student-athletes also gained recognition at the Laurens County Sports Awards Night, with Hall King and Andy B. Young being inducted into the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame.

Looking ahead, the district aims to continue its tradition of maintaining no local property tax increases for school operations, as outlined in the upcoming budget meetings.

As residents brace for severe weather, additional thunderstorm warnings have been issued for areas not currently under tornado warnings, with forecasts indicating risks of 70 mph wind gusts and flooding from heavy rainfall. Following the storms, the weather is expected to clear overnight, with temperatures cooling down to the low 60s.

This critical weather event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the community as they navigate both severe weather and educational developments. The administration remains focused on ensuring student safety and achievement as they approach the end of the academic year.
