CLINTON, S.C. — Relatives and friends will gather Friday in Clinton to remember Bobby Joe Meadors, who spent decades with the South Carolina National Guard and helped found Davidson Street Baptist Church.
He died Tuesday at National Healthcare of Clinton after several months of care. Born in 1931, he joined the Guard as a teenager, finished Clinton High School in 1949, and later ran the local Guard unit as a civil service administrator.
His career also took him to the Troop Command in Columbia and, during Operation Desert Storm, to Army duty supporting military families. He left the Guard in 1991 holding the rank of Command Sergeant Major.
At the church on Davidson Street he served as a deacon, chair of deacons, treasurer and Sunday School teacher. A 2 p.m. service is planned Friday, with military honors at the graveside afterward at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation begins an hour earlier at the church. Gray Funeral Home of Clinton is directing the arrangements, and the family invited memorial gifts to the congregation or to Parkinson and juvenile diabetes research funds listed in the notice.
