CLINTON, S.C. — Clinton High School leaned on its ground game Friday night at Wilder Stadium, beating Mountain View Prep 46-34 to stop a three-game losing streak in the first meeting ever between the two programs.
The region game swung back and forth. The Stars carried a 27-22 lead into the locker room, but the Red Devils took the second-half kickoff and drove for the touchdown that put them back in front.
Clinton finished with 530 yards on 61 snaps, and only 35 of those yards came through the air. Senior Angelo Cromer did most of the heavy lifting with 250 yards on 29 carries, while Jaiden Jeter added 160 yards on 13 attempts. Camden Gregory handled the short-yardage work near the goal line and scored three times.
The defense made the plays that decided it. Graydon Watkins picked off a pass with 9:29 to go, and Jeter followed with a touchdown plus a two-point conversion that stretched the margin to 12. Mountain View Prep then drove deep, but Clinton turned it away on a fourth-down pass with 5:34 remaining.
There was one more scare. The Stars recovered a Clinton fumble with 52 seconds left, but their final throw into the end zone sailed long as the clock ran out.
Halftime ran longer than usual. School District 56 used the break to announce that its baseball and softball complex will carry the name of the late Bill Rhodes, who spent 65 years working in the local schools.
