Greenwood, S.C. — Emerald fell 37-30 to Wren on Friday night in Piedmont, dropping a SCHSL Week 8 thriller after a late touchdown pass and a game-ending interception.
Wren broke a 30-30 tie when its quarterback connected with Jack Hughes on a 40-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Wren then secured the victory with a late interception, handing Emerald another close defeat.
Emerald led 30-23 after a strong rushing night before Wren answered. Kickoff returns repeatedly set Wren up with short fields in the second half.
Emerald coach Tad DuBose said special teams mistakes gave Wren great field position and that the Vikings have to execute in all three phases.
The Vikings are now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in region play and no longer control their destiny in Region 1. A bye week is next as Emerald looks to regroup for the stretch run.
Scoreboards for Oct. 9 listed Wren 37, Emerald 30 among Upstate Class 3A finals.
