High school students in Clinton and across Laurens County have until September 4 to apply for the third Mayors Youth Council in the City of Laurens. This initiative offers students a chance to engage with local government, gain experience, volunteer, and connect with community leaders.
The Youth Council meets monthly from September through May, with sessions led by Laurens Mayor Nathan Senn. These meetings include roundtable discussions, workshops, tours of city facilities, and project planning. Mayor Senn emphasized the value of young people’s perspectives in serving citizens, citing an example where the Youth Council provided feedback for renovations at Little River Park, which will be incorporated into the park’s completion.
Students selected for the council will also build relationships with city department heads, members of the Laurens County Chamber, and other community figures. Mayor Senn noted that the program is an opportunity for service, believing that these young participants inspire older community members through their volunteering and involvement.
The selection process for the seven available positions does not solely focus on grade point averages or extensive extracurricular involvement. The city seeks students from diverse backgrounds and experiences to represent areas such as arts, athletics, academics, public service, community service, environmental interests, and minority youth. Mayor Senn expressed his appreciation for the varied strengths and abilities students bring, highlighting that the program welcomes individuals who offer their unique voices and experiences.
While students can complete their own applications, nominations must come from a teacher, guidance counselor, or coach. This nomination requirement aims to encourage participation from students who might not otherwise recognize the benefits of the experience. Applicants are not required to reside within the city limits of Laurens, and public, private, and homeschooled students are all encouraged to apply.
