CLINTON, S.C. — Andy Young, the Clinton High School graduate who came back to lead the Red Devils football program for 17 seasons, died this week at his home. He was 76.
Young took the head job in 1993 and walked away with a 155-win record and three state championships, in 1993, 2005 and 2009. The 2009 title game against Myrtle Beach was the last he coached. He also won a state title guiding the school tennis team.
Before he ran the program, he spent two decades on the staff of longtime coach Keith Richardson, helping build the run of championships that made Clinton one of the best-known football towns in the state.
His education career in Laurens County School District 56 lasted more than 30 years. He studied at Erskine College and Clemson University, served in the South Carolina National Guard and was active at First Baptist Church of Clinton.
Young entered the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame and the state coaches association hall of fame in 2025.
The family will receive visitors Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church in Clinton from 1 until 3, and a service honoring his life begins there at 3. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton.
