CLINTON, S.C. — The Clinton Community Garden Project turns 10 this fall, and the volunteer group is throwing a free party for the whole town on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the garden at 1118 S. Bell St.
The gathering is billed as a thank-you to the people who have kept the plot growing. Organizers plan live music, door prizes, health screenings, activities for families and tours of the beds that will run all evening. Chef Robert Moore is cooking a buffet dinner, and nobody pays to get in.
The project began a decade ago when local churches, among them First Presbyterian, First Baptist and Friendship A.M.E., joined with business owners and neighbors to start it. Today it hands out fresh produce and offers gardening and health lessons to Clinton and nearby communities.
The group is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and the garden sits on South Bell Street across from Friendship AME Church. Its yearly fall gathering has a history of weather trouble: rain pushed last year’s edition back a week to Nov. 4. At that event, Prisma Health and Presbyterian College ran free blood pressure and blood sugar checks and gave flu shots.
