Born on November 4, 1941, in North Adams, Massachusetts, William, often referred to as “Bill,” was the son of William and Ruth (Richards) Ostrander. He later gained a stepfather, Karl Stauder. Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Sheila (Donovan) Ostrander, after they attended school together and went to North Adams State College. Their marriage lasted 56 years until Sheila’s passing on May 25, 2020, which deeply affected Bill.
Bill dedicated an impressive 44 years to the field of education. He spent the majority of his career as a science teacher and Assistant Headmaster at Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, CT, where he was affectionately known by his students as “Mr. O” due to his unique and engaging teaching style. Afterward, he continued to inspire students at Daniel Hand High School in Madison, CT.
In addition to his teaching career, Bill was an active member of the Clinton community, volunteering as an EMT with the Clinton Fire Department for over 25 years. His service not only demonstrated his dedication to helping others but also allowed him to forge many lasting friendships during his tenure.
Outside of his professional life, Bill had a rich personal life filled with diverse interests. He was an avid reader, often enjoying Sunday mornings with Sheila while reading the New York Times and working on crossword puzzles. Known for his passion for cooking, Bill cherished family gatherings, celebrating holidays with lovingly prepared home-cooked meals.
Bill and Sheila shared a love for travel, often exploring the scenic beauty of their hometown, the Berkshires. A sports enthusiast, Bill played semi-professional baseball shortly after his college years and remained a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox throughout his life.
He is survived by his children, Steven Ostrander and his wife Bounmy Phansiri, and Lisa (Ostrander) Mansfield and her husband Chris Mansfield. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, known as “Papa” to Stephanie Mansfield from Charleston, SC, and Jake Mansfield from Washington, DC. Stephanie pursued a career as a special education teacher, while Jake works in the intelligence field, accomplishments Bill celebrated with great pride.
Known as a kind and gentle man, Bill had a wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. In his final days, he was supported by individuals who cared deeply for him, highlighting the strong relationships he fostered throughout his life.
Bill is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Gattuso, brother-in-law, Daniel Donovan, and several nieces and nephews. A private ceremony will be held at a later date to honor his memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clinton Fire Department.
