With three open positions available, interested individuals can apply online until May 16, 2025. Elections will take place online on May 30, 2025. Additionally, Thornwell is expanding its capacity for the 2024-2025 school year, preparing to accommodate students from Summit, who will be closing in June 2024. The school aims to provide a smooth transition for the new students.

Clinton, SC – Thornwell Charter School is actively seeking candidates for three open positions on its Board of Directors, aiming to reinforce its governance as it prepares for expansions following the impending closure of Summit Classical Charter School. Interested individuals can apply for these positions online until 12 PM EDT on May 16, 2025.

The elected candidates will serve a two-year term and must submit their applications through the online platform. Upon closing the candidate filing period, the provided candidate information and application answers will be made publicly available on May 20, 2025.

A Zoom forum is scheduled for May 29, 2025, at 5:00 PM, allowing candidates to present their qualifications and reasons for running for the board. Voting for board candidates will commence online on May 30, 2025, at 7 AM and will end the same day at 7 PM. It is important to note that voting is limited to one vote per child enrolled in the school and one vote per employee. The election results will be certified on June 2, 2025, and the newly elected board members will be publicly announced shortly afterward. Those elected will be sworn in and assume their roles during the board meeting on July 24, 2025.

Once in office, board members are expected to attend all scheduled meetings and participate in training sessions, with free training provided by the State Department of Education within their first year.

In addition to the board elections, Thornwell Charter School is planning to expand for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year to accommodate students from Summit Classical Charter School, which will be closing its doors on June 30, 2024. Thornwell is set to add an additional class at each grade level from 5K to 5, thus opening slots specifically for students transitioning from Summit. If there are any remaining positions after allowing for enrollment from Summit students, those will be filled from Thornwell’s existing waitlist.

Thornwell’s leadership has expressed a strong commitment to welcoming new students from the recently-closed Summit Classical Charter School, aiming to provide these students with a smooth transition into their educational environment. Recently recognized for its outstanding academic performance, Thornwell received the Platinum School of Distinction award in 2021, marking its reputation for quality education in the region.

Summit Classical Charter School, which began operations in 2019, is set to cease operations after servicing 72 students at the time of its closure. In light of this transition, resources have been made available to assist Summit families in enrolling at Thornwell or exploring other educational opportunities that may be suitable.

As Thornwell Charter School gears up for significant changes in leadership and student body, the board elections and expansion initiatives underscore the school’s commitment to adapting to the educational needs of the community it serves.
