Kids in Laurens County compete for grand prize in summer reading challenge
Laurens County is buzzing with excitement as children are immersing themselves in a grand summer reading challenge, hosted by the Laurens County Library. The kids are competing with each other to see who can read the most books this summer. This competition – known as Ringling Readers – has transformed the library into an intensely lively place.
The Joy of Reading
As the scent of popcorn wafts through the air and the delicious sight of ice cream attracts the younger crowd, Library Director, Renita Barksdale emphasizes on the importance of developing a love for reading from an early age. “Reading is so important.” Barksdale says. “It’s the fundamentals of what makes kids responsible adults and helps them succeed in school. So, reading is very essential for them to do over the summer.”
Kids in the Spotlight
Among the many participants, Kamdon Cook stands out as he has already zeroed in on his favorite book series – ‘I Survived’. He gushes, “I like that book very much, and that book very much inspired me to start reading.”
On the other hand, another active participant, Leela Thomas is already mapping her reading journey. “I’ll probably get the ‘Harry Potter’ book if they have it.” Thomas reveals excitedly.
Grand Prizes on the Line
Apart from the joy of reading, there’s an additional incentive for the kids to persevere. Those who read more than 12 books stand a chance to take home grand prizes. These range from a brand new bike to fun LEGO sets and more. Kamdon Cook is hopeful of winning, but he doesn’t shy away from being a good sport about it, “I hope I win, but if I don’t, it’s fine. I already have a bike, so I might actually want a new one.” Cook expresses gracefully.
Open to All
The program isn’t limited to children. Individuals aged 18 and above are also encouraged to participate. To qualify for the prizes, both children and adults must read a minimum of 12 books.

The Summer Reading Challenge in Laurens County has already started. Interested participants are required to submit their reading logs by August 3 for a chance to bag the grand prize.
