Each year, the City of Newberry opens its doors to non-profit organizations keen on driving tourism-related activities. This year was no different, as applicants were encouraged to demonstrate their eligibility and submit requests to the Accommodations Tax Committee. On March 25, the committee reviewed six applications, and the enthusiasm for these projects was palpable.

In total, six organizations pitched in for a slice of the funding pie, submitting projects amounting to an impressive $138,673. However, the available funds for distribution stood at $95,090.90, reflecting a hefty increase of $91,007.26 compared to the previous year. The funds mainly come from the city’s share of a 2% lodging tax imposed by the state of South Carolina, which has proven to be a vital source of revenue for Newberry.

• Newberry Downtown Development Association: $12,500
• Newberry Museum: $4,000
• City of Newberry Parks, Recreation, and Tourism: $30,000
• RitzFest: $10,000
• Newberry Opera House Foundation: $30,000

With the council’s backing, Assistant City Manager Jeff Wicker shared that each organization would soon be contacted to discuss fund disbursement. It’s worth noting that the funded projects must be wrapped up within one year, ensuring timely benefits for tourists and locals alike.

Community Support with a Heart

Rotary Club of Newberry made headlines of their own. They presented a generous $2,500 check to the Living Hope Foundation to support local food banks that were hit hard by Hurricane Helene. This grant is a testament to the Rotary Club’s long-standing partnership with the Foundation, showing that community resilience is alive and well in Newberry.

To further assist those in need, the Rotary Club plans to host a food drive from April 28 to May 13. The drive aims to help approximately 200 families and will be supported by dedicated volunteers.
