Spring break brought excitement and challenges for the varsity baseball team of Newberry High School as they participated in the annual Sandlapper Classic. Hopes were high as the Bulldogs kicked off the tournament with a bang, showcasing their talent against Horse Creek Academy on April 12th. They didn’t just win; they convincingly rounded up a score of 13-3 that really set the tone for the competition.
Falling Short in the Next Games
However, the joy was short-lived. In their second game, they faced White Knoll, a match that turned out to be a bit disappointing with a loss of 6-2. Even though Newberry gave it their all, rallying back to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, they just couldn’t climb out of the hole they had dug.
Things didn’t improve as they headed back to Gilbert High School for the last game of the tournament on April 15th. The Bulldogs faced off against Camden High School and unfortunately, it was a tough outing, ending with an 11-0 defeat. The game was a struggle in all aspects, with Newberry committing four errors and managing only one hit. It was a far cry from the confidence they had shown at the start of the tournament.

After the Sandlapper Classic, Newberry’s overall record stood at eight wins and nine losses, with a decent regional standing of 3-3 in region 5-AAA. The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back and will have their next chance on April 21st when they hit the road to play Silver Bluff. Edrick Dawkins and Bryce Satterwhite shone brightly during that match, contributing multiple RBIs that helped solidify the Bulldog’s victory.
