Mary was born on February 15, 1942, in Darlington County, South Carolina. Although she spent many years in Mt. Clemens, her roots remained deeply embedded in her hometown of Darlington. She completed her education at Rosenwald High School and received her academic training in the local public school system.
Her lifelong dedication to her faith began at Round O Baptist Church during her youth, leading her to become a dedicated member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church after relocating to Mt. Clemens. Mary was united in marriage to Artis Blanchett on August 12, 1968, and the couple shared a remarkable 50 years of love and commitment. Together, they raised five children, including three sons, a daughter, and another son.
Mary had a passion for gardening that reflected her nurturing spirit, caring for both indoor and outdoor plants with great enthusiasm. In her professional life, she worked at Brechteen Co. for several years before retiring, later dedicating her time to the care of residents at an adult care home. From the mid-1970s onward, Mary actively participated in her church community, serving on the Usher Board while contributing to various church activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie Thomas Lowery and Johnny McNeil, along with her husband, Artis Blanchett. Additionally, Mary mourned the loss of her two brothers, Robert “Sonny” Lowery and John Henry Thomas, five sisters, including Lois “Sissy” Collins, Helen “Sister” Harkless, Ruby Bush, Beatrice Addison, and Eva Lee “Doll Baby” Lowery, as well as her daughter, Joyal “Mookie” Collins McLaurin.
Mary is survived by her children: Darryl Antonio Blanchett (Pam) of Bay City, MI, Jodie L. Blanchett of Mt. Clemens, MI, Shawn L. Blanchett of Clinton Township, MI, and James Collins of Aiken, SC. Additionally, she leaves behind family friend Rita Wills, grandchildren including Ariane Robinson, Raquel Wills, Jodie Wills, Kameron Brown, and Donovan Blanchett, as well as siblings Steven Lowery, George Lowery, Annette Nettles, Minister Eula Pack, and Lizzie Williamson. She will be cherished and remembered by an extended family of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and friends.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Clemens. Following the service, interment will occur at Clinton Grove Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan. The family asks for thoughts and prayers for all who knew Mary during this time of grief.
