Colonie Senior Sienna Wheeler Shines in Section II Golf Championships

Colonie, NY – In a strong showing at the Section II Girls’ Golf Championships held at Hiland Park on October 16, 2024, Colonie senior Sienna Wheeler demonstrated her skill by shooting a solid 78. This impressive score puts her in a tie for third place heading into the final round on Friday. With her focus and determination, Wheeler is poised to compete for the title as the tournament progresses.

Last week saw multiple standout performances from local athletes across various sports. In football, Dominic DiBacco of Shaker had a remarkable game with three rushing touchdowns in a 27-19 loss against Christian Brothers Academy. Meanwhile, Jacob Phelps from Averill Park excelled, rushing for 166 yards and scoring one touchdown, while also catching two passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns in a hefty 47-12 victory over La Salle.

In quarterback performances, Zavry Ward of Queensbury threw for 364 yards and six touchdowns in a dominating 41-12 win against South Glens Falls. Not to be outdone, Brody Holcomb of Glens Falls completed 20 of 27 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns, leading his team to a 27-8 win over Mechanicville/Hoosic Valley.

On the girls’ soccer field, Alina Lagace from Shaker shined, scoring three goals and adding an assist against Averill Park, while Gianna Cirilla of Schalmont found the net three times in a 6-4 win against Waterford-Halfmoon. It was also a great week for Gloversville’s Caelan Porter, who threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns in their 48-28 victory over Schalmont.

In women’s cross country, the Bethlehem Eagles dominated the Albany County Meet by finishing in the top five positions and securing a team score of just 15 points.

As the week progresses, local athletes are gearing up for crucial games that could define their seasons. With promising performances so far, the excitement in high school sports continues to build in Colonie and the surrounding areas.
