High School Football State Championships Recap

This past Saturday, December 14, high school teams across California battled it out in the CIF State championship games. The championships showcased remarkable talent and unforgettable moments, culminating in successful seasons for several schools.

In the Open Division match, Mater Dei claimed victory over De La Salle with a score of 37-15. This win not only improved their record to an impressive 13-0 for the season but also positions them as likely contenders for the national championship. The team showcased their skills with a standout performance by TE Mark Bowman, who caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from QB Dash Beierly. Additionally, RB Jordon Davison scored on a 15-yard run during a lengthy drive that solidified their lead.

Moving on to Division 1-A, Edison triumphed over Fresno Central with a tight score of 21-14. In a nail-biting finale, Sam Thomson connected with Jake Minter for a 54-yard touchdown pass with just 20 seconds remaining, leading the Chargers to their first-ever CIF state title.

In Division 2-A, Palos Verdes emerged victorious against Twelve Bridges, winning 55-19. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Rakowski shone brightly, throwing an impressive six touchdown passes, tying the state record for a championship game. This victory marks Palos Verdes’ first state title in football, capping an incredible season.

The Division 3-A game was a thriller, with Vanden winning against Rio Hondo Prep in overtime by a score of 42-41. Noah Penunuri’s fourth-down touchdown was a highlight, leading to a tense two-point conversion attempt that ultimately fell short.

In Division 4-A, Sonora exceeded expectations with a resounding victory of 52-34 over St. Pius X-St. Matthias, winning their first state championship overall after a rollercoaster season.

Other notable games included Arcata narrowly defeating Portola in Division 6-A with a final score of 27-21 in overtime, and Balboa dominating Pioneer in Division 7-A with a score of 55-27.

These matches highlighted incredible skill and determination as teams fought for victory, leaving fans excited for what the next season will bring.
