Cooper High School Football Team Falls in State Finals
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Cooper High School football team wrapped up its season as the Class 5A state runner-up after a tough game against Bowling Green on Saturday night at Kroger Field. The final score was 37-20 in favor of Bowling Green, marking the second consecutive year that Cooper faced defeat in the state finals against the same team.
Despite the loss, Cooper had an impressive season, finishing with a 13-1 record. The team had plenty of success leading up to the championship, outscoring its opponents 644 to 215 throughout the year. Cooper celebrated several significant victories this season, including wins against Ryle, Highlands (twice), and Great Crossing, all contributing to their second straight appearance in the state final.
Cooper’s junior quarterback, Cam O’Hara, showed remarkable performance in the championship game, completing 18 of 27 passes for 262 yards along with three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jaiden Combs was a key player, catching 7 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Another standout was senior wide receiver Isaiah Johnson, who contributed with 5 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, junior linebacker Max Wethington made a significant impact with 13 tackles, while senior defensive end Mike Mullvihill and junior linebacker Dax Bolen each had 10 tackles. Special teams also shined with junior wide receiver/safety Ryker Campbell, who not only had 3 receptions for 72 yards but also made valuable contributions on defense with an interception.
This weekend also featured other local teams in championship action. Earlier on Saturday, Ryle (11-3) finished its season as the Class 6A state runner-up. Meanwhile, Beechwood claimed victory over Owensboro Catholic 50-34 in the Class 2A state final on Friday night, marking their 18th football state championship.
As their season comes to a close, the Cooper Jaguars can hold their heads high, showcasing exceptional talent and teamwork throughout the year.
