News Summary

The Clinton City Council has announced the nearing completion and dedication of the renovated Fuller Fire Station, which has undergone significant upgrades for better living conditions for firefighters. The facility now features improved amenities, including bathrooms, a kitchen, and a laundry setup, providing a more professional environment for personnel who previously lived in a camper on-site. Alongside this, the council approved funding for updated police technology, showing a commitment to community safety and infrastructure improvement.

Clinton, SC – The Clinton City Council announced the nearing completion and dedication of the renovated Fuller Fire Station located along the Springdale Drive by-pass. Fire Chief Jeremy Marshall provided an extensive overview of the upgrades made to the facility, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by two firefighters.

Prior to the renovations, conditions at the fire station were described as unacceptable for the personnel working there. The firefighters had been living in a camper on-site during construction, which will now be sold by the city. The newly refurbished station includes significant improvements such as passing inspections, the installation of a generator, and the addition of a tankless water heater.

The renovation also introduced one and a half bathrooms, a small kitchen area, multi-functional tables, lockers, and a full washers and dryers setup. Firefighters will now have a proper space to change into their uniforms on-site, with all uniforms stored within the facility. The new firehouse design accommodates two bunks and allows for two additional bed frames to be installed to accommodate emergency staffing needs.

Additionally, a closet has been integrated into the facility’s layout to store a lawnmower and various equipment. The renovated station will retain the name Fuller Fire Station, with family members of Ronnie Fuller invited for the dedication ceremony.

In other council decisions, a budget allocation of $565,000 was approved for new body cameras and car dashboard cameras for the Clinton Police Department. The existing camera system, which is between 10 to 12 years old, has been inefficient and slow, hampering investigative efforts. Notably, $105,000 of this funding will be sourced from a dedicated training and equipment fund. The existing system’s operational issues prevent it from being sold, as it faces server concerns.

Mayor Randy Randall emphasized the critical need for the updated camera system, highlighting its role in enhancing accountability for law enforcement. During the meeting, the council also recognized October as Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and Bicycling and Pedestrian Awareness Month.

Furthermore, an approval was granted to the ATAX Committee for reviewing funding applications from tourism-related groups. Scott Taylor received re-appointment to the zoning board of appeals, and the council voted to approve the annexation and zoning of a .33-acre property on Jacobs Highway for a new medical facility. The zoning designation for an old store in Lydia Mill was switched from residential to office-professional use.

In initiatives aimed at community improvement, City Manager Joey Meadors will apply for a $25,000 grant to formulate a master plan for the downtown business district. In anticipation of colder weather, community groups are collaborating to provide free meals and collect donations for homeless individuals.

Additionally, Council Member Danny Smith reported receiving positive feedback from residents concerning the city’s response to a recent power outage. The council received an invitation to attend the President’s Box at Bailey Memorial Stadium on November 22. It was also mentioned that the brother of former county council member David Tribble tragically died in a bicycle accident over the past weekend.
