Construction workers repairing a bridge in South Carolina

News Summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is inviting public feedback for two important bridge replacement projects. The comment period is open from July 17 to August 7, allowing residents to express their opinions on the Enoree River bridge and the Pleasant Hill Road bridge in Greenville County. Both projects aim to enhance transportation infrastructure following previous damages, ensuring safety and connectivity for local communities.

Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is calling for public feedback on two crucial bridge replacement projects in the state. The comment period for these projects is set to run from July 17, 2025, to August 7, 2025, providing residents an opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns.

The first project focuses on the replacement of the bridge over the Enoree River at the Laurens-Spartanburg county line on S-30-112 (Beaverdam Church Road) and S-42-116 (Kilgore Bridge Road). This particular bridge was demolished after it suffered irreparable damage during Hurricane Helene. The estimated cost associated with the Enoree River bridge replacement is approximately $15 million, which encompasses expenses related to preliminary engineering, right-of-way acquisition, and construction efforts.

The second project targets the Pleasant Hill Road bridge over the Middle Tiger River in Greenville County. This bridge was closed earlier this year due to damage inflicted by a concrete truck in early 2025. The anticipated cost for this replacement project is around $2.96 million.

Public comments can be submitted to Ginny Jones, the Public Involvement Director in the SCDOT Office of Public Engagement. Submissions can be made by mail to 955 Park Street, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, SC 29202. Alternatively, residents can also share their insights via email at SCDOTpubliccomment@scdot.org or submit comments online. More detailed information and a comprehensive list of STIP Comment Notices can be found on the SCDOT website at www.scdot.org/projects/public-comment-notices.

These projects are part of SCDOT’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the safety and reliability of South Carolina’s transportation infrastructure. The replacement of aging and damaged bridges is vital to ensuring effective transportation routes for both commuters and goods across the state.

Following Hurricane Helene, which caused significant disruptions in various infrastructure across the state, SCDOT has prioritized the assessment and prompt action on compromised structures. The Enoree River bridge is a key route linking communities in Laurens and Spartanburg counties, making its reconstruction essential for maintaining local traffic flows and public safety.

Similarly, the Pleasant Hill Road bridge plays a crucial role in the connectivity of Greenville County. The incident involving the bridge, which was impacted by a concrete truck crash, highlights the importance of maintaining infrastructure resilience and safety standards.

With an increasing number of citizens relying on safe passage across bridges for their daily commutes, SCDOT emphasizes the need for excited public engagement. The agency aims to incorporate community feedback into their plans, ensuring that projects meet the needs and expectations of local residents.

The upcoming public comment period not only allows citizens to voice their opinions on these specific bridge replacements but also signifies SCDOT’s commitment to inclusive decision-making processes. Residents are encouraged to take part and express their views on the matter, contributing to a collective effort aimed at improving South Carolina’s infrastructure.
