Pittsburgh is buzzing with excitement this week as high school football heats up, particularly in the City League. The big match of the week is set for Thursday night at Cupples Stadium, where two-time defending champions Westinghouse will take on Allderdice. Both teams have been impressive in their City League games, holding strong records of 2-0 in the City League and 4-1 overall. With first place in District 8 on the line, this matchup promises to be a thrilling contest.
Both teams have showcased outstanding defensive play, with Westinghouse outscoring their opponents 132-0 in their two district games. Meanwhile, Allderdice also left their mark by shutting out the same two teams, Brashear and Perry, by a combined score of 74-0. The Bulldogs are on a four-game winning streak after suffering a close loss to Beaver in Week Zero, while the Dragons have won three in a row following an earlier shutout loss to Hollidaysburg.
Historically, this rivalry has seen both teams go head-to-head more than 14 times in the last seven seasons, including several playoff meetings. While Westinghouse has an edge with four wins to Allderdice’s three in playoffs, the regular season has tilted towards the Bulldogs, who have claimed victory in eight straight regular season matchups since 2015.
As for the other sports, the WPIAL boys soccer scene is also heating up. In Class 3A, two sections are tightly contested. In Section 2-3A, Bethel Park leads with a record of 7-1, closely followed by Thomas Jefferson and Ringgold. Meanwhile, the race for the top spot in Section 3-3A is also competitive, with Latrobe, Franklin Regional, and Allderdice separated by only a game.
Thursday evening promises to be busy across various sports, as high school volleyball also features crucial matchups for first place in both Class 2A and Class A play. Quaker Valley hosts Hopewell and Charleroi visits Waynesburg, each vying for the top position in their respective sections.
Lastly, expect some updates in the WPIAL girls tennis doubles sectionals, which were postponed due to rainy weather earlier this week and will now take place on Thursday afternoon.
