Key Events of October

Unbe-LEAF-able Science

The first event kicks off on Monday, October 6, from 4–5 p.m. at the Laurens Branch located at 1017 West Main Street. This activity is tailored for children ages 6–10 and will explore the science behind why leaves change color in the fall. Participants will extract natural pigments from leaves and create leaf rubbings. For inquiries, contact Samantha Hobbs at (864) 681-7323.

SC Plants the Seed

On Tuesday, October 7, and Tuesday, October 14, adults will have the opportunity to purchase fresh produce from Sims Epps Farm from 3–6 p.m. at the Laurens Branch. For every $5 spent, customers will receive $15 in Healthy Bucks. Additionally, a cooking demonstration by Sharon Lone from Clemson SNAP-Ed will be held. Story time for children and free book distribution will also be included. Payment methods accepted are cash, SNAP, WIC, SFMNP, and Healthy Bucks. Garden Green Thumbs Workshop

On the evening of Tuesday, October 7, from 5–6:15 p.m., a workshop led by Master Gardener James Reynolds will take place at the Clinton Branch (304 West Pitts Street). This workshop will cover effective techniques for container and straw bale gardening. Interested adults can reach out to Jayson Santana at (864) 547-1845.

Rotten Eggs Needle Felting Workshop

A Halloween-themed workshop will occur on Wednesday, October 8, from 2–3:15 p.m. at the Clinton Branch, focusing on creating felted egg decorations. This event is open to all ages, and further information can be obtained from Jayson Santana at (864) 547-1845.

Blood Drive: OneBlood

An important blood drive will be held on Thursday, October 9, from 12–5 p.m. at the Laurens Branch, encouraging adults to donate blood. Donors will receive a thank-you gift while supplies last. Those interested can contact Jayson Santana at (864) 547-1845.

Laurens County Museum October Programs

The Laurens County Museum will host free public lectures and exhibit hall tours from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Highlights include:

  • October 9: 7:00 p.m. presentation by Colleen Knights on “The Future in Genealogy Using Artificial Intelligence.”

On Tuesday, October 14, at Noon, author Ann-Chadwell Humphries will discuss Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman in South Carolina during the Civil War.

Historic Presentation

Later on October 14, at 7:00 p.m., the topic “The Cherokee War of 1776” by Durant Ashmore will be presented. A suggested donation of $5 is requested for non-members to attend.

Participation in Squealin’ on the Square

On October 17 and 18, the library will engage in Squealin’ on the Square with a children’s booth and historians sharing information about the Revolutionary War.

Annual Historic Halloween

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 28, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for the Annual Historic Halloween event at the Witherspoon Building. This members-only event will feature live music, a costume contest, ghost tours, and refreshments. RSVP is needed by October 24.

Looking Ahead

Upcoming events include the Merry Market at the Museum Christmas Market on November 28–29 and a “Festival of Trees” display running from late October through mid-January.
