Jerry was the son of the late Grady Columbus Kemp and Jennie Verle Pruitt Kemp and was also the stepson of the late Joseph D. Hawkins. He grew up in a unique upbringing, spending his formative years from ages three to fourteen at the Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, SC. Throughout his life, Jerry embraced the Presbyterian faith, which served as a cornerstone of his values and community involvement.
Active in sports during his youth, Jerry showcased his athletic abilities in football and baseball, and he was particularly known for his swimming prowess, especially his elegant swan dives. Beyond sports, he nurtured a passion for fishing, wildlife, and dogs, which endeared him further to those around him. His character was marked by generosity and compassion, and he established lasting friendships within his community.
Professionally, Jerry dedicated 40 years to Tietex International, gaining recognition as a highly skilled technician. During his tenure, he built, repaired, and maintained over 50 machines, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
