News Summary

The Newberry High School varsity baseball team had a rocky time at the Sandlapper Classic after a strong start. Winning their first game against Horse Creek Academy 13-3 set high hopes, but they lost to White Knoll 6-2 and were defeated by Camden High School 11-0 in their last game. With an overall record of 8-9 and a region standing of 3-3, the Bulldogs aim to regroup as they prepare for upcoming matches against Silver Bluff and Fox Creek.

Newberry High School Baseball Team Struggles in Sandlapper Classic After Strong Start

Spring break brought excitement and challenges for the varsity baseball team of Newberry High School as they participated in the annual Sandlapper Classic. Hopes were high as the Bulldogs kicked off the tournament with a bang, showcasing their talent against Horse Creek Academy on April 12th. They didn’t just win; they convincingly rounded up a score of 13-3 that really set the tone for the competition.

Falling Short in the Next Games

However, the joy was short-lived. In their second game, they faced White Knoll, a match that turned out to be a bit disappointing with a loss of 6-2. It was rough going, with three errors on the field definitely playing a part in their downfall. Even though Newberry gave it their all, rallying back to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, they just couldn’t climb out of the hole they had dug.

Things didn’t improve as they headed back to Gilbert High School for the last game of the tournament on April 15th. The Bulldogs faced off against Camden High School and unfortunately, it was a tough outing, ending with an 11-0 defeat. The game was a struggle in all aspects, with Newberry committing four errors and managing only one hit. It was a far cry from the confidence they had shown at the start of the tournament.

Current Standing and Upcoming Matches

After the Sandlapper Classic, Newberry’s overall record stood at eight wins and nine losses, with a decent regional standing of 3-3 in region 5-AAA. The Bulldogs are looking to bounce back and will have their next chance on April 21st when they hit the road to play Silver Bluff. Following that, they return home to face Fox Creek on April 23rd, which fans hope will be an opportunity to turn things around.

Challenges Beyond the Tournament

16-1. This game wasn’t just about the numbers on the scoreboard; it was also marred by injuries and the absence of head coach Dylan Skinner, which definitely took an emotional toll on the team. Despite a promising start, allowing a three-run home run from Kade Tedder spelled disaster for their momentum. They scored their only run in the second inning thanks to a single from Mason Mills, but that just wasn’t enough.

With assistant coach Trey Kinnard stepping in during Skinner’s absence, the team was reminded of the importance of pushing through adversity and utilizing these learning experiences for future matches. It’s been a tough spring for the Bulldogs, but with a lot of games yet to play on their schedule, there could be a silver lining waiting just around the corner.

Bright Spots in the Season

Not all news has been gloomy for Newberry! On April 10th, they enjoyed a spectacular win against Whitmire, scoring an astonishing 19-3. They truly lit up the scoreboard with a mind-blowing 13 runs in the fifth inning alone. Edrick Dawkins and Bryce Satterwhite shone brightly during that match, contributing multiple RBIs that helped solidify the Bulldog’s victory.

Looking ahead as they prepare to take on Swansea in a home region matchup on April 11th, there’s a renewed energy in Newberry as fans and players alike hope for a turnaround. With determination and teamwork, the Bulldogs can surely shake off this recent string of tough losses and find their winning stride again!
