CLINTON, S.C. — A second-half penalty kick from junior striker Julija Poplašen gave Presbyterian College women’s soccer a 1-0 victory over Longwood on Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium in Clinton, the first Big South win of the season for the Blue Hose.

Neither side scored in the first half. Poplašen, who played 32 minutes off the bench, converted from the spot at the 69:30 mark. It was her only shot of the day, and it made her the fourth Blue Hose player with at least two goals this year.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Garcia made three saves, two of them in the 81st minute, and the Lancers did not attempt another shot after that. It was the first Big South shutout this fall for Garcia and the Presbyterian defense, and the team’s first clean sheet of any kind since a scoreless draw at North Dakota State in August.

Longwood sophomore Lexie Miller, in her first college start in goal, turned away five shots. Presbyterian put six of its eight attempts on target, while Longwood managed three on goal from nine tries. Each team had three corner kicks.

The result ended a seven-match unbeaten run for Longwood in the series, which the Lancers still lead 9-4-6. Longwood falls to 6-8-2 and 3-4 in league play, and Presbyterian improves to 4-9-1 and 1-5.

Presbyterian wraps up its home schedule Wednesday at 7 p.m., when High Point visits Martin Stadium.
