CLINTON, S.C. — Old prescriptions sitting in a cabinet in Clinton can be dropped off with police at no cost, and without anyone asking questions.

Clinton police keep a medication drop box at the Bailey Municipal Building on North Broad Street. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and police call it a free, environmentally safe way to get rid of unwanted, unused or expired medicine.

The box takes prescription pills and patches, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, samples and pet medications. It does not take needles or other sharps, EpiPens, radioactive or chemotherapy drugs, aerosols, liquids or ointments.

Police ask people to bring medicine in its original container, put it in a zip-top bag and drop the bag in the box. Take the empty bottles home, and peel off and shred any label with personal information before recycling them.

Getting old pills out of the house is also the point of the DEA’s national prescription drug take-back days. The federal agency says unused prescription drugs too often end up in the wrong hands. During the 30th national collection, 4,306 law enforcement agencies took part and collected 642,410 pounds of drugs, the agency reports.
