The Truist Championship will become part of the new PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028, a development announced on Wednesday. This tournament, often held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, will maintain its status as a top-tier event within the Tour’s restructured competitive model.

PGA Tour CEO and Commissioner Brian Rolapp confirmed on Tuesday that four additional Championship Series events would be revealed in the coming weeks, with the Truist Championship being the first. Truist Chairman and CEO Bill Rogers expressed pride in continuing the partnership with the PGA Tour, Quail Hollow Club, and the Charlotte community, emphasizing the event’s role in showcasing top players and contributing to community building.

The Championship Series, initially announced in June, is designed to feature the Tour’s leading performers in head-to-head competition throughout the season. This new structure will encompass approximately 23 to 24 events, including the Players Championship, major championships, postseason tournaments, and international team events like the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. The season is slated to run from February through August.

The Truist Championship is currently in its 24th year as an annual PGA Tour stop and its third year as a signature event. It is scheduled to return to Quail Hollow from May 13-16. A complete PGA Tour schedule for 2028, when the Championship Series officially begins, is expected to be released at a later date.

For Aiken golf enthusiasts, this change signifies a major shift in the professional golf landscape, potentially impacting how local fans engage with the sport’s premier events. While the Palmetto Golf Club and the Masters Week proximity are key local golf attractions, the broader PGA Tour structure influences the sport’s visibility and appeal across the region.
